Yusuf [12]: 47 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ تَزْرَعُوْنَ سَبْعَ سِنِيْنَ دَاَبًاۚ فَمَا حَصَدْتُّمْ فَذَرُوْهُ فِيْ سُنْۢبُلِهٖٓ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُوْنَ (يوسف : ١٢)

Transliteration:

Qaala tazra'oona sab'a sineena da aban famaa basattum fazaroohu fee sumbu liheee illaa qaleelam mimmaa taakuloon (QS. Yūsuf:47)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat. (QS. Yusuf, ayah 47)

He said, “You will grow crops for seven years consecutively. So, what you have harvested, leave it in its ear, except a little which you eat.

Joseph replied, “You will plant ˹grain˺ for seven consecutive years, leaving in the ear whatever you will harvest, except for the little you will eat.

English Literal

He said: "You sow/seed/plant seven years habitually/consistently, so what you harvested/gathered, so leave it in its ear/spike (of corn, barley etc.), except little from what you eat."

He said, "You will cultivate for seven years continuously; so leave all that you harvest in the ear, except a little which you eat."

(When he came to Joseph, he said) "Joseph! O you truthful one! Explain to us the seven fat kine which seven lean ones devoured; and the seven green ears of corn and others dry that I may return to the people, per chance (or possibly) they then may know!"

Joseph said, "You shall sow for seven consecutive years as usual, but leave in the ear the harvest that you reap, except for a little which you may eat.

He said, “You will farm for seven consecutive years. But whatever you harvest, leave it in its spikes, except for the little that you eat.”

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `You shall sow -- that is, [go ahead and] sow -- seven years consecutively -- and this was the interpretation of the seven fat ones -- but that which you reap, leave it in the ear, lest it spoil, except for a little which you eat; thresh it.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ تَزْرَعُونَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ دَأَبًا

(Yusuf) said;"For seven consecutive years, you shall sow as usual)

`you will receive the usual amount of rain and fertility for seven consecutive years.'

He interpreted the cows to be years, because cows till the land that produce fruits and vegetables, which represent the green ears of corn in the dream.

He next recommended what they should do during these fertile years,

فَمَا حَصَدتُّمْ فَذَرُوهُ فِي سُنبُلِهِ إِلاَّ قَلِيلً مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ
