Yusuf [12]: 32 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَتْ فَذٰلِكُنَّ الَّذِيْ لُمْتُنَّنِيْ فِيْهِ ۗوَلَقَدْ رَاوَدْتُّهٗ عَنْ نَّفْسِهٖ فَاسْتَعْصَمَ ۗوَلَىِٕنْ لَّمْ يَفْعَلْ مَآ اٰمُرُهٗ لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُوْنًا مِّنَ الصّٰغِرِيْنَ (يوسف : ١٢)

I sought to seduce him

نَّفْسِهِۦ
[himself]
fa-is'taʿṣama
فَٱسْتَعْصَمَۖ
but he saved himself
wala-in
وَلَئِن
and if
lam
لَّمْ
not
yafʿal
يَفْعَلْ
he does
مَآ
what
āmuruhu
ءَامُرُهُۥ
I order him
layus'jananna
لَيُسْجَنَنَّ
surely he will be imprisoned
walayakūnan
وَلَيَكُونًا
and certainly will be
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-ṣāghirīna
ٱلصَّٰغِرِينَ
those who are disgraced

Transliteration:

Qaalat fazaalikunnal lazee lumtunnanee feeh; wa laqad raawattuhoo 'an nafsihee fasta'sam; wa la'il lam yaf'al maaa aamuruhoo la yusjananna wa la yakoonam minas saaghireen (QS. Yūsuf:32)

English / Sahih Translation:

She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased." (QS. Yusuf, ayah 32)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

She said, “This is the one about whom you reproached me. Yes, I seduced him, but he abstained. And should he not follow my command, he shall be imprisoned and will be disgraced.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

She said, “This is the one for whose love you criticized me! I did try to seduce him but he ˹firmly˺ refused. And if he does not do what I order him to, he will certainly be imprisoned and ˹fully˺ disgraced.”[[ The women tried to convince him to obey the Chief Minister’s wife, so Joseph prayed to Allah to keep him away from them. ]] 

Ruwwad Translation Center

She said, “This is the one for whose love you reproached me. I did try to seduce him but he abstained. If he does not follow my order, he will surely be imprisoned and will be fully humiliated.”

'So now you see, she said. 'This is he you blamed me for. Yes, I solicited him, but he abstained. Yet if he will not do what I command him, he shall be imprisoned, and be one of the humbled.'

Abdul Haleem

She said, ‘This is the one you blamed me for. I tried to seduce him and he wanted to remain chaste, but if he does not do what I command now, he will be put in prison and degraded.’

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

She said: that then is he in regard to whom ye reproached me. Assuredly solicited him against himself but he abstained; and if he doth not that which I command him, he shall surely be imprisoned and he shall surely be of the degraded.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

She said; "There before you is the man about whom ye did blame me! I did seek to seduce him from his (true) self but he did firmly save himself guiltless!.... and now, if he doth not my bidding, he shall certainly be cast into prison, and (what is more) be of the company of the vilest!"

Abul Ala Maududi

She said: "So now you see! This is the one regarding whom you reproached me. Indeed I tried to tempt him to myself but he held back, although if he were not to follow my order, he would certainly be imprisoned and humiliated."

Ahmed Ali

She said: "This is the one you blamed me for. I did desire his person, but he preserved himself from sin. Yet in case he does not do my bidding he will be put into prison and disgraced."

Ahmed Raza Khan

She said, “This is he on whose account you used to insult me; and indeed I tried to entice him, so he safeguarded himself; and indeed if he does not do what I tell him to, he will surely be imprisoned, and will surely be humiliated.”

Ali Quli Qarai

She said, ‘He is the one on whose account you blamed me. Certainly, I did solicit him, but he was continent, and if he does not do what I bid him, surely he shall be imprisoned and humbled.’

Ali Ünal

She said: "This is the one about whom you have been taunting me. And, indeed, I did seek to enjoy myself by him, but he was resolute in his chastity. Yet if he continues to refuse what I command him, he shall certainly be imprisoned, and shall certainly find himself among the humbled!"

Amatul Rahman Omar

She said, `So (you have seen) this is he about whom you blamed me. I did seek to seduce him against his will, but he preserved himself (from sin), yet (I tell him aloud) if he do not what I bid him, he shall certainly be imprisoned, and he shall indeed be of the humiliated ones.´

English Literal

She said: "So that (is) what you blamed/reprimanded me in him, and I had seduced/enticed him from himself so he held fast/protected himself from evil , and if (E) he does not make/do what I order/command him, he will be imprisoned (E) and (he) will be (E) from the lowly/humiliated ."

Faridul Haque

She said, "This is he on whose account you used to insult me; and indeed I tried to entice him, so he safeguarded himself; and indeed if he does not do what I tell him to, he will surely be imprisoned, and will surely be humiliated."

And when she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them, and prepared for them a banquet, and gave each of them a knife; and she said (to Joseph), "Come forth to them!" And when they saw him they exalted (admired) him and cut their hands exclaiming, "Allah preserve us! No mortal is this! This is none but a noble angel."

Hilali & Khan

She said: "This is he (the young man) about whom you did blame me (for his love), and I did seek to seduce him, but he refused. And now if he refuses to obey my order, he shall certainly be cast into prison, and will be one of those who are disgraced."

Maulana Mohammad Ali

So when she heard of their device, she sent for them and prepared for them a repast, and gave each of them a knife, and said (to Joseph): Come out to them. So when they saw him, they deemed him great, and cut their hands (in amazement), and said: Holy Allah! This is not a mortal! This is but a noble angel.

She said: This is he with respect to whom you blamed me, and certainly I sought his yielding himself (to me), but he abstained, and if he does not do what I bid him, he shall certainly be imprisoned, and he shall certainly be of those who are in a state of ignominy.

She said: This is he on whose account ye blamed me. I asked of him an evil act, but he proved continent, but if he do not my behest he verily shall be imprisoned, and verily shall be of those brought low.

Muhammad Sarwar

She said, "This is the one on whose account you subjected me to all this blame. I tried to seduce him but he abstained. If he does not yield to me, I shall order him to be locked up in prison to make him humble."

Qaribullah & Darwish

Whereupon she said: 'Now you see, this is he on whose account you blamed me. Yes, I sought to seduce him, but he was unyielding. If he declines to do what I command, he shall be imprisoned and be one of the humiliated'

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

She said: "This is he (the young man) about whom you did blame me, and I did seek to seduce him, but he refused. And now if he refuses to obey my order, he shall certainly be cast into prison, and will be one of those who are disgraced."

Wahiduddin Khan

She said, "This is he about whom you have been blaming me! And, indeed, I did try to make him yield to me, but he was unyielding. Now, however, if he does not do as I bid him, he shall certainly be put in prison and be humiliated."

Talal Itani

She said, “Here he is, the one you blamed me for. I did try to seduce him, but he resisted. But if he does not do what I tell him to do, he will be imprisoned, and will be one of the despised.”

Tafsir jalalayn

She, the wife of the Court Officer, said, when she saw what happened to them, `This is he on whose account, for the love of whom, you blamed me (alladh lumtunnan fhi is an explication of her excuse). Indeed I did attempt to seduce him, but he withheld himself, he refused. Yet if he does not do what I bid him, he verily shall be imprisoned, and verily shall be of those brought low', those abased. The women said to him; `Obey your mistress!'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَتْ فَذَلِكُنَّ الَّذِي لُمْتُنَّنِي فِيهِ

"This is none other than a noble angel!"

She said;"This is he (the young man) about whom you did blame me..."

She said these words to them so that they excuse her behavior, for a man who looks this beautiful and perfect, is worthy of being loved, she thought.

She said,

وَلَقَدْ رَاوَدتُّهُ عَن نَّفْسِهِ فَاسَتَعْصَمَ

and I did seek to seduce him, but he refused, (to obey me).

Some scholars said that;

when the women saw Yusuf's beauty, she told them about his inner beauty that they did not know of, being chaste and beautiful from the inside and outside.

She then threatened him,

وَلَيِن لَّمْ يَفْعَلْ مَا امُرُهُ لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونًا مِّنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ



And now if he refuses to obey my order, he shall certainly be cast into prison, and will be one of those who are disgraced.

This is when Prophet Yusuf sought refuge with Allah from their evil and wicked plots
