41

يٰصَاحِبَيِ السِّجْنِ اَمَّآ اَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِيْ رَبَّهٗ خَمْرًا ۗوَاَمَّا الْاٰخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُ الطَّيْرُ مِنْ رَّأْسِهٖ ۗ قُضِيَ الْاَمْرُ الَّذِيْ فِيْهِ تَسْتَفْتِيٰنِۗ ٤١

yāṣāḥibayi
يَٰصَىٰحِبَىِ
O my two companions
l-sij'ni
ٱلسِّجْنِ
(of) the prison!
ammā
أَمَّآ
As for
aḥadukumā
أَحَدُكُمَا
one of you
fayasqī
فَيَسْقِى
he will give drink
rabbahu
رَبَّهُۥ
(to) his master
khamran
خَمْرًاۖ
wine
wa-ammā
وَأَمَّا
and as for
l-ākharu
ٱلْءَاخَرُ
the other
fayuṣ'labu
فَيُصْلَبُ
he will be crucified
fatakulu
فَتَأْكُلُ
and will eat
l-ṭayru
ٱلطَّيْرُ
the birds
min
مِن
from
rasihi
رَّأْسِهِۦۚ
his head
quḍiya
قُضِىَ
Has been decreed
l-amru
ٱلْأَمْرُ
the matter
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
about which
fīhi
فِيهِ
about which
tastaftiyāni
تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ
you both inquire"
O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 41)
Tafsir
42

وَقَالَ لِلَّذِيْ ظَنَّ اَنَّهٗ نَاجٍ مِّنْهُمَا اذْكُرْنِيْ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَۖ فَاَنْسٰىهُ الشَّيْطٰنُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهٖ فَلَبِثَ فِى السِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِيْنَ ࣖ ٤٢

waqāla
وَقَالَ
And he said
lilladhī
لِلَّذِى
to the one whom
ẓanna
ظَنَّ
he thought
annahu
أَنَّهُۥ
that he
nājin
نَاجٍ
(would be) saved
min'humā
مِّنْهُمَا
of both of them
udh'kur'nī
ٱذْكُرْنِى
"Mention me
ʿinda
عِندَ
to
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
your master"
fa-ansāhu
فَأَنسَىٰهُ
But made him forget
l-shayṭānu
ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ
the Shaitaan
dhik'ra
ذِكْرَ
(the) mention
rabbihi
رَبِّهِۦ
(to) his master
falabitha
فَلَبِثَ
so he remained
فِى
in
l-sij'ni
ٱلسِّجْنِ
the prison
biḍ'ʿa
بِضْعَ
several
sinīna
سِنِينَ
years
And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and he [i.e., Joseph] remained in prison several years. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 42)
Tafsir
43

وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ اِنِّيْٓ اَرٰى سَبْعَ بَقَرٰتٍ سِمَانٍ يَّأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ وَّسَبْعَ سُنْۢبُلٰتٍ خُضْرٍ وَّاُخَرَ يٰبِسٰتٍۗ يٰٓاَيُّهَا الْمَلَاُ اَفْتُوْنِيْ فِيْ رُؤْيَايَ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ لِلرُّءْيَا تَعْبُرُوْنَ ٤٣

وَقَالَ
And said
l-maliku
ٱلْمَلِكُ
the king
innī
إِنِّىٓ
"Indeed I
arā
أَرَىٰ
[I] have seen
sabʿa
سَبْعَ
seven
baqarātin
بَقَرَٰتٍ
cows
simānin
سِمَانٍ
fat
yakuluhunna
يَأْكُلُهُنَّ
eating them
sabʿun
سَبْعٌ
seven
ʿijāfun
عِجَافٌ
lean ones
wasabʿa
وَسَبْعَ
and seven
sunbulātin
سُنۢبُلَٰتٍ
ears (of corn)
khuḍ'rin
خُضْرٍ
green
wa-ukhara
وَأُخَرَ
and other
yābisātin
يَابِسَٰتٍۖ
dry
yāayyuhā
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
O
l-mala-u
ٱلْمَلَأُ
chiefs!
aftūnī
أَفْتُونِى
Explain to me
فِى
about
ru'yāya
رُءْيَٰىَ
my vision
in
إِن
if
kuntum
كُنتُمْ
you can
lilrru'yā
لِلرُّءْيَا
of visions
taʿburūna
تَعْبُرُونَ
interpret"
And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 43)
Tafsir
44

قَالُوْٓا اَضْغَاثُ اَحْلَامٍ ۚوَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَأْوِيْلِ الْاَحْلَامِ بِعٰلِمِيْنَ ٤٤

qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
They said
aḍghāthu
أَضْغَٰثُ
"Confused
aḥlāmin
أَحْلَٰمٍۖ
dreams
wamā
وَمَا
and not
naḥnu
نَحْنُ
we
bitawīli
بِتَأْوِيلِ
(are) in the interpretation
l-aḥlāmi
ٱلْأَحْلَٰمِ
(of) the dreams
biʿālimīna
بِعَٰلِمِينَ
learned"
They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 44)
Tafsir
45

وَقَالَ الَّذِيْ نَجَا مِنْهُمَا وَادَّكَرَ بَعْدَ اُمَّةٍ اَنَا۠ اُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِتَأْوِيْلِهٖ فَاَرْسِلُوْنِ ٤٥

وَقَالَ
But said
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
the one who
najā
نَجَا
was saved
min'humā
مِنْهُمَا
of the two
wa-iddakara
وَٱدَّكَرَ
and remembered
baʿda
بَعْدَ
after
ummatin
أُمَّةٍ
a period
anā
أَنَا۠
"I
unabbi-ukum
أُنَبِّئُكُم
[I] will inform you
bitawīlihi
بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ
of its interpretation
fa-arsilūni
فَأَرْسِلُونِ
so send me forth
But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 45)
Tafsir
46

يُوْسُفُ اَيُّهَا الصِّدِّيْقُ اَفْتِنَا فِيْ سَبْعِ بَقَرٰتٍ سِمَانٍ يَّأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ وَّسَبْعِ سُنْۢبُلٰتٍ خُضْرٍ وَّاُخَرَ يٰبِسٰتٍۙ لَّعَلِّيْٓ اَرْجِعُ اِلَى النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْلَمُوْنَ ٤٦

أَيُّهَا
O
l-ṣidīqu
ٱلصِّدِّيقُ
the truthful one!
aftinā
أَفْتِنَا
Explain to us
فِى
about
sabʿi
سَبْعِ
(the) seven
baqarātin
بَقَرَٰتٍ
cows
simānin
سِمَانٍ
fat
yakuluhunna
يَأْكُلُهُنَّ
eating them
sabʿun
سَبْعٌ
seven
ʿijāfun
عِجَافٌ
lean ones
wasabʿi
وَسَبْعِ
and seven
sunbulātin
سُنۢبُلَٰتٍ
ears (of corn)
khuḍ'rin
خُضْرٍ
green
wa-ukhara
وَأُخَرَ
and other
yābisātin
يَابِسَٰتٍ
dry
laʿallī
لَّعَلِّىٓ
that I may
arjiʿu
أَرْجِعُ
return
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-nāsi
ٱلنَّاسِ
the people
laʿallahum
لَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
know"
[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry – that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 46)
Tafsir
47

قَالَ تَزْرَعُوْنَ سَبْعَ سِنِيْنَ دَاَبًاۚ فَمَا حَصَدْتُّمْ فَذَرُوْهُ فِيْ سُنْۢبُلِهٖٓ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُوْنَ ٤٧

قَالَ
He said
tazraʿūna
تَزْرَعُونَ
"You will sow
sabʿa
سَبْعَ
(for) seven
sinīna
سِنِينَ
years
da-aban
دَأَبًا
as usual
famā
فَمَا
and that which
ḥaṣadttum
حَصَدتُّمْ
you reap
fadharūhu
فَذَرُوهُ
so leave it
فِى
in
sunbulihi
سُنۢبُلِهِۦٓ
its ears
illā
إِلَّا
except
qalīlan
قَلِيلًا
a little
mimmā
مِّمَّا
from which
takulūna
تَأْكُلُونَ
you (will) eat
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 47)
Tafsir
48

ثُمَّ يَأْتِيْ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ سَبْعٌ شِدَادٌ يَّأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا مِّمَّا تُحْصِنُوْنَ ٤٨

Then

will come

بَعْدِ
after
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
sabʿun
سَبْعٌ
seven
shidādun
شِدَادٌ
hard (years)
yakul'na
يَأْكُلْنَ
(which will) consume
مَا
what
qaddamtum
قَدَّمْتُمْ
you advanced
lahunna
لَهُنَّ
for them
illā
إِلَّا
except
qalīlan
قَلِيلًا
a little
mimmā
مِّمَّا
of what
tuḥ'ṣinūna
تُحْصِنُونَ
you (will) store
Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 48)
Tafsir
49

ثُمَّ يَأْتِيْ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ عَامٌ فِيْهِ يُغَاثُ النَّاسُ وَفِيْهِ يَعْصِرُوْنَ ࣖ ٤٩

thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
yatī
يَأْتِى
will come
min
مِنۢ
after
baʿdi
بَعْدِ
after
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
ʿāmun
عَامٌ
a year
fīhi
فِيهِ
in it
yughāthu
يُغَاثُ
will be given abundant rain
l-nāsu
ٱلنَّاسُ
the people
wafīhi
وَفِيهِ
and in it
yaʿṣirūna
يَعْصِرُونَ
they will press"
Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 49)
Tafsir
50

وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ ائْتُوْنِيْ بِهٖ ۚفَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُ الرَّسُوْلُ قَالَ ارْجِعْ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ فَسْـَٔلْهُ مَا بَالُ النِّسْوَةِ الّٰتِيْ قَطَّعْنَ اَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۗاِنَّ رَبِّيْ بِكَيْدِهِنَّ عَلِيْمٌ ٥٠

وَقَالَ
And said
l-maliku
ٱلْمَلِكُ
the king
i'tūnī
ٱئْتُونِى
"Bring him to me"
bihi
بِهِۦۖ
"Bring him to me"
falammā
فَلَمَّا
But when
jāahu
جَآءَهُ
came to him
l-rasūlu
ٱلرَّسُولُ
the messenger
qāla
قَالَ
he said
ir'jiʿ
ٱرْجِعْ
"Return
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
your lord
fasalhu
فَسْـَٔلْهُ
and ask him
مَا
what
bālu
بَالُ
(is the) case
l-nis'wati
ٱلنِّسْوَةِ
(of) the women
allātī
ٱلَّٰتِى
who
qaṭṭaʿna
قَطَّعْنَ
cut
aydiyahunna
أَيْدِيَهُنَّۚ
their hands
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
rabbī
رَبِّى
my Lord
bikaydihinna
بِكَيْدِهِنَّ
of their plot
ʿalīmun
عَلِيمٌ
(is) All-Knower"
And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 50)
