21

وَقَالَ الَّذِى اشْتَرٰىهُ مِنْ مِّصْرَ لِامْرَاَتِهٖٓ اَكْرِمِيْ مَثْوٰىهُ عَسٰىٓ اَنْ يَّنْفَعَنَآ اَوْ نَتَّخِذَهٗ وَلَدًا ۗوَكَذٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوْسُفَ فِى الْاَرْضِۖ وَلِنُعَلِّمَهٗ مِنْ تَأْوِيْلِ الْاَحَادِيْثِۗ وَاللّٰهُ غَالِبٌ عَلٰٓى اَمْرِهٖ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ ٢١

waqāla
وَقَالَ
And said
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
the one who
ish'tarāhu
ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ
bought him
min
مِن
of
miṣ'ra
مِّصْرَ
Egypt
li-im'ra-atihi
لِٱمْرَأَتِهِۦٓ
to his wife
akrimī
أَكْرِمِى
"Make comfortable
mathwāhu
مَثْوَىٰهُ
his stay
ʿasā
عَسَىٰٓ
Perhaps
an
أَن
that
yanfaʿanā
يَنفَعَنَآ
(he) will benefit us
aw
أَوْ
or
nattakhidhahu
نَتَّخِذَهُۥ
we will take him
waladan
وَلَدًاۚ
(as) a son"
wakadhālika
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And thus
makkannā
مَكَّنَّا
We established
liyūsufa
لِيُوسُفَ
Yusuf
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the land
walinuʿallimahu
وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ
that We might teach him
min
مِن
(the) interpretation of
tawīli
تَأْوِيلِ
(the) interpretation of
l-aḥādīthi
ٱلْأَحَادِيثِۚ
the events
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ghālibun
غَالِبٌ
(is) Predominant
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
over
amrihi
أَمْرِهِۦ
His affairs
walākinna
وَلَٰكِنَّ
but
akthara
أَكْثَرَ
most
l-nāsi
ٱلنَّاسِ
(of) the people
لَا
(do) not
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
know
And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events [i.e., dreams]. And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 21)
Tafsir
22

وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ اَشُدَّهٗٓ اٰتَيْنٰهُ حُكْمًا وَّعِلْمًا ۗوَكَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِى الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ ٢٢

walammā
وَلَمَّا
And when
balagha
بَلَغَ
he reached
ashuddahu
أَشُدَّهُۥٓ
his maturity
ātaynāhu
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُ
We gave him
ḥuk'man
حُكْمًا
wisdom
waʿil'man
وَعِلْمًاۚ
and knowledge
wakadhālika
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And thus
najzī
نَجْزِى
We reward
l-muḥ'sinīna
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
the good-doers
And when he [i.e., Joseph] reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 22)
Tafsir
23

وَرَاوَدَتْهُ الَّتِيْ هُوَ فِيْ بَيْتِهَا عَنْ نَّفْسِهٖ وَغَلَّقَتِ الْاَبْوَابَ وَقَالَتْ هَيْتَ لَكَ ۗقَالَ مَعَاذَ اللّٰهِ اِنَّهٗ رَبِّيْٓ اَحْسَنَ مَثْوَايَۗ اِنَّهٗ لَا يُفْلِحُ الظّٰلِمُوْنَ ٢٣

وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ
And sought to seduce him
allatī
ٱلَّتِى
she who
huwa
هُوَ
he (was)
فِى
in
baytihā
بَيْتِهَا
her house
ʿan
عَن
from
nafsihi
نَّفْسِهِۦ
his self
waghallaqati
وَغَلَّقَتِ
And she closed
l-abwāba
ٱلْأَبْوَٰبَ
the doors
waqālat
وَقَالَتْ
and she said
hayta
هَيْتَ
"Come on
laka
لَكَۚ
you"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
maʿādha
مَعَاذَ
"I seek refuge in Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۖ
"I seek refuge in Allah
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
rabbī
رَبِّىٓ
(is) my lord
aḥsana
أَحْسَنَ
(who has) made good
mathwāya
مَثْوَاىَۖ
my stay
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed
لَا
not
yuf'liḥu
يُفْلِحُ
will succeed
l-ẓālimūna
ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
the wrongdoers"
And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 23)
Tafsir
24

وَلَقَدْ هَمَّتْ بِهٖۙ وَهَمَّ بِهَا ۚ لَوْلَآ اَنْ رَّاٰى بُرْهَانَ رَبِّهٖۗ كَذٰلِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ السُّوْۤءَ وَالْفَحْشَاۤءَۗ اِنَّهٗ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُخْلَصِيْنَ ٢٤

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
hammat
هَمَّتْ
she did desire
bihi
بِهِۦۖ
him
wahamma
وَهَمَّ
and he would have desired
bihā
بِهَا
her
lawlā
لَوْلَآ
if not
an
أَن
that
raā
رَّءَا
he saw
bur'hāna
بُرْهَٰنَ
the proof
rabbihi
رَبِّهِۦۚ
(of) his Lord
kadhālika
كَذَٰلِكَ
Thus
linaṣrifa
لِنَصْرِفَ
that We might avert
ʿanhu
عَنْهُ
from him
l-sūa
ٱلسُّوٓءَ
the evil
wal-faḥshāa
وَٱلْفَحْشَآءَۚ
and the immorality
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed he
min
مِنْ
(was) of
ʿibādinā
عِبَادِنَا
Our slaves
l-mukh'laṣīna
ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
the sincere
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof [i.e., sign] of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 24)
Tafsir
25

وَاسْتَبَقَا الْبَابَ وَقَدَّتْ قَمِيْصَهٗ مِنْ دُبُرٍ وَّاَلْفَيَا سَيِّدَهَا لَدَا الْبَابِۗ قَالَتْ مَا جَزَاۤءُ مَنْ اَرَادَ بِاَهْلِكَ سُوْۤءًا اِلَّآ اَنْ يُّسْجَنَ اَوْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌ ٢٥

wa-is'tabaqā
وَٱسْتَبَقَا
And they both raced
l-bāba
ٱلْبَابَ
(to) the door
waqaddat
وَقَدَّتْ
and she tore
qamīṣahu
قَمِيصَهُۥ
his shirt
min
مِن
from
duburin
دُبُرٍ
the back
wa-alfayā
وَأَلْفَيَا
and they both found
sayyidahā
سَيِّدَهَا
her husband
ladā
لَدَا
at
l-bābi
ٱلْبَابِۚ
the door
qālat
قَالَتْ
She said
مَا
"What
jazāu
جَزَآءُ
(is) the recompense
man
مَنْ
(of one) who
arāda
أَرَادَ
intended
bi-ahlika
بِأَهْلِكَ
for your wife
sūan
سُوٓءًا
evil
illā
إِلَّآ
except
an
أَن
that
yus'jana
يُسْجَنَ
he be imprisoned
aw
أَوْ
or
ʿadhābun
عَذَابٌ
a punishment
alīmun
أَلِيمٌ
painful?"
And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?" (QS. [12] Yusuf: 25)
Tafsir
26

قَالَ هِيَ رَاوَدَتْنِيْ عَنْ نَّفْسِيْ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌ مِّنْ اَهْلِهَاۚ اِنْ كَانَ قَمِيْصُهٗ قُدَّ مِنْ قُبُلٍ فَصَدَقَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ الْكٰذِبِيْنَ ٢٦

قَالَ
He said
hiya
هِىَ
"She
rāwadatnī
رَٰوَدَتْنِى
sought to seduce me
ʿan
عَن
about
nafsī
نَّفْسِىۚ
myself"
washahida
وَشَهِدَ
And testified
shāhidun
شَاهِدٌ
a witness
min
مِّنْ
of
ahlihā
أَهْلِهَآ
her family
in
إِن
"If
kāna
كَانَ
[is]
qamīṣuhu
قَمِيصُهُۥ
his shirt
qudda
قُدَّ
(is) torn
min
مِن
from
qubulin
قُبُلٍ
the front
faṣadaqat
فَصَدَقَتْ
then she has spoken the truth
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
and he
mina
مِنَ
(is) of
l-kādhibīna
ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ
the liars
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 26)
Tafsir
27

وَاِنْ كَانَ قَمِيْصُهٗ قُدَّ مِنْ دُبُرٍ فَكَذَبَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ ٢٧

wa-in
وَإِن
But if
kāna
كَانَ
[is]
qamīṣuhu
قَمِيصُهُۥ
his shirt
qudda
قُدَّ
(is) torn
min
مِن
from
duburin
دُبُرٍ
(the) back
fakadhabat
فَكَذَبَتْ
then she has lied
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
and he
mina
مِنَ
(is) of
l-ṣādiqīna
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
the truthful"
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 27)
Tafsir
28

فَلَمَّا رَاٰى قَمِيْصَهٗ قُدَّ مِنْ دُبُرٍ قَالَ اِنَّهٗ مِنْ كَيْدِكُنَّ ۗاِنَّ كَيْدَكُنَّ عَظِيْمٌ ٢٨

falammā
فَلَمَّا
So when

رَءَا
he saw
qamīṣahu
قَمِيصَهُۥ
his shirt
qudda
قُدَّ
torn
min
مِن
from
duburin
دُبُرٍ
(the) back
qāla
قَالَ
he said
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
"Indeed it
min
مِن
(is) of
kaydikunna
كَيْدِكُنَّۖ
your plot
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
kaydakunna
كَيْدَكُنَّ
your plot
ʿaẓīmun
عَظِيمٌ
(is) great
So when he [i.e., her husband] saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of your [i.e., women's] plan. Indeed, your plan is great [i.e., vehement]. (QS. [12] Yusuf: 28)
Tafsir
29

يُوْسُفُ اَعْرِضْ عَنْ هٰذَا وَاسْتَغْفِرِيْ لِذَنْۢبِكِۖ اِنَّكِ كُنْتِ مِنَ الْخٰطِـِٕيْنَ ࣖ ٢٩

يُوسُفُ
Yusuf
aʿriḍ
أَعْرِضْ
turn away
ʿan
عَنْ
from
hādhā
هَٰذَاۚ
this
wa-is'taghfirī
وَٱسْتَغْفِرِى
And ask forgiveness
lidhanbiki
لِذَنۢبِكِۖ
for your sin
innaki
إِنَّكِ
Indeed you
kunti
كُنتِ
are
mina
مِنَ
of
l-khāṭiīna
ٱلْخَاطِـِٔينَ
the sinful"
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 29)
Tafsir
30

۞ وَقَالَ نِسْوَةٌ فِى الْمَدِيْنَةِ امْرَاَتُ الْعَزِيْزِ تُرَاوِدُ فَتٰىهَا عَنْ نَّفْسِهٖۚ قَدْ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّاۗ اِنَّا لَنَرٰىهَا فِيْ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيْنٍ ٣٠

وَقَالَ
And said
nis'watun
نِسْوَةٌ
women
فِى
in
l-madīnati
ٱلْمَدِينَةِ
the city
im'ra-atu
ٱمْرَأَتُ
"The wife of
l-ʿazīzi
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
Aziz
turāwidu
تُرَٰوِدُ
(is) seeking to seduce
fatāhā
فَتَىٰهَا
her slave boy
ʿan
عَن
about
nafsihi
نَّفْسِهِۦۖ
himself;
qad
قَدْ
indeed
shaghafahā
شَغَفَهَا
he has impassioned her
ḥubban
حُبًّاۖ
(with) love
innā
إِنَّا
Indeed we
lanarāhā
لَنَرَىٰهَا
[we] surely see her
فِى
in
ḍalālin
ضَلَٰلٍ
an error
mubīnin
مُّبِينٍ
clear"
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-Azeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error." (QS. [12] Yusuf: 30)
