Al-Qur'an Surah Hud Verse 93

Mufti Taqi Usmani

O my people, do what you can, I am to do (what I can). Soon you will know the one whom the punishment will visit, putting him to disgrace, and the one who is false. And wait. I am, with you, waiting.”

And you (my) nation, make/do on your capacity/place/position, that I am making/doing/working, you will/shall know who comes to him torture (that) shames/scandalizes/disgraces him, and who he is lying/denying , and observe/watch that I am with you (an) observer/watcher ."

Tafsir jalalayn

And, O my people, act according to your ability, your circumstances, lo! I [too] am acting, according to mine. You will soon know upon whom (man is the relative particle introducing the direct object of [the action of] `knowing') will come the chastisement that will abase him, and who is a liar. And sit in watch, wait for the consequence of your affair; I too will be with you watching', waiting.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Shu`ayb's threatening of His People

When the Prophet of Allah, Shu`ayb, despaired of their response to him, he said,

وَيَا قَوْمِ اعْمَلُواْ عَلَى مَكَانَتِكُمْ



"O my people, Act according to your ability,

This means, "Act according to your current ways."

This is actually a severe threat.

إِنِّي عَامِلٌ

I am acting.

according to my way.

سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَن يَأْتِيهِ عَذَابٌ يُخْزِيهِ وَمَنْ هُوَ كَاذِبٌ

You will come to know who it is on whom descends the torment that will cover him with ignominy, and who is a liar!

meaning, between me and you.

وَارْتَقِبُواْ

And watch you!

This means to wait.

إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ رَقِيبٌ



I too am watching with you.

Allah then says,

وَلَمَّا جَاء أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا شُعَيْبًا وَالَّذِينَ امَنُواْ مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ مَّنَّا

وَأَخَذَتِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ الصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُواْ فِي دِيَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ
