Hud [11]: 89 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَيٰقَوْمِ لَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شِقَاقِيْٓ اَنْ يُّصِيْبَكُمْ مِّثْلُ مَآ اَصَابَ قَوْمَ نُوْحٍ اَوْ قَوْمَ هُوْدٍ اَوْ قَوْمَ صٰلِحٍ ۗوَمَا قَوْمُ لُوْطٍ مِّنْكُمْ بِبَعِيْدٍ (هود : ١١)

wayāqawmi
وَيَٰقَوْمِ
And O my people!

(Let) not cause you to sin

Transliteration:

Wa yaa qawmi laa yajri mannakum shiqaaqeee ai yuseebakum mislu maaa asaaba qawma Noohin aw qawma Hoodin aw qawma Saalih; wa maa qawmu Lootim minkum biba'eed (QS. Hūd:89)

English / Sahih Translation:

And O my people, let not [your] dissension from me cause you to be struck by that similar to what struck the people of Noah or the people of Hud or the people of Saleh. And the people of Lot are not from you far away. (QS. Hud, ayah 89)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

O my people, let not your hostility towards me cause you to suffer what was suffered by the people of NūH, or the people of Hūd, or the people of SāliH. And the people of LūT are not far from you.

O  my people! Do not let your opposition to me lead you to a fate similar to that of the people of Noah, or Hûd, or Ṣâliḥ. And the people of Lot are not far from you.[[ Geographically and chronologically. ]]

English Literal

And you (my) nation (let) not my defiance/animosity (to you) make you commit a crime/sin that strikes you (with) similar (to) what stuck Noah`s nation, or Hood`s nation, or Saleh`s nation, and Lot`s nation is not with far/distant from you.

"And O my people! May not your opposition to me occasion the coming upon you of the thing similar to what befell the people of Nooh or the people of Hud or the people of Saleh; and the people of Lut are not at all far from you!"

Hamid S. Aziz

He said, "O my people! Bethink you, if I stand upon a manifest sign (clear proof) from my Lord, and He provides me from Himself with a goodly provision, how can I concede aught to you. I desire not to do behind your backs that which I forbid you. I desire naught but to reform you so far as I am able. Nor comes my grace through any one but Allah. On Him do I rely, and unto Him I turn.

"And O my people! Let not my Shiqaqcause you to suffer the fate similar to that of the people of Nuh (Noah) or of Hud or of Salih (Saleh), and the people of Lout (Lot) are not far off from you!

He said: O my people, see you if I have a clear proof from my Lord and He has given me a goodly sustenance from Himself. And I desire not to act in opposition to you, in that which I forbid you. I desire nothing but reform, so far as I am able. And with none but Allah is the direction of my affair to a right issue. In Him I trust and to Him I turn.

“O my people, let not your hostility towards me cause you to suffer what was suffered by the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Saleh. The people of Lot are not far away from you.”

Tafsir jalalayn

And, O my people, let not the breach with me, the dispute [you have] with me (shiqq, `the breach with me', is the subject of the verb yajrimannakum, `make you deserve', in which the [suffixed] pronoun [-kum, `you'] constitutes the first direct object, the second being [what follows]) make you deserve, earn you [as punishment], that there befall you the like of what befell the people of Noah, or the people of Hd, or the people of Slih, in the way of chastisement; and the people of Lot, that is, their dwelling-places or the era in which they were destroyed, are not far away from you, so take heed [of this].

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

He (Shu`ayb) said to them,

وَيَا قَوْمِ لَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شِقَاقِي

And O my people! Let not my Shiqaq cause you,

This means, "Do not let your hatred and enmity of me cause you to persist in your corruption and disbelief. If you continue this way, you will suffer the same vengeance and torment that overcame Nuh's people, Hud's people, Salih's people and Lut's people."

Qatadah said,
وَيَا قَوْمِ لَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شِقَاقِي
(And O my people! Let not my Shiqaq cause you),

"He is saying, `Do not be influenced by your differing with me."'

As-Suddi said,

"This means your enmity of me should not lead you to continue in misguidance and disbelief, or else you will be afflicted by what afflicted them."

أَن يُصِيبَكُم مِّثْلُ مَا أَصَابَ قَوْمَ نُوحٍ أَوْ قَوْمَ هُودٍ أَوْ قَوْمَ صَالِحٍ
to suffer the fate similar to that of the people of Nuh or of Hud or of Salih,

and the people of Lut are not far off from you!"

Concerning His statement,

وَمَا قَوْمُ لُوطٍ مِّنكُم بِبَعِيدٍ



and the people of Lut are not far off from you!

It has been said that this refers to the period of time.

Qatadah said,

"This means that they were only destroyed before you yesterday."

It has also been said that it refers to place. Actually, the verse carries both meanings
