Al-Qur'an Surah Hud Verse 84

And to Madyan (We sent) their brother, Shu‘aib. He said, “O my people, worship Allah. You have no god other than Him. And do not curtail the measure and the weight. I see you quite well off, and I fear for you the punishment of an encircling day.

And to Madyan/Madya (We sent) their brother Shu`aib, he said: "You (my) nation, worship God (there is) not for you from a God other than Him, and do not reduce/decrease the measuring/weighing device , and the scale/weight , that I see/understand you with goodness , and that I, I fear on you a surrounding`s/encircling`s day`s torture."

Tafsir jalalayn

And, We sent, to Midian their brother Shu`ayb. He said, `O my people, worship God!, affirm His Oneness. You have no god other than He. And diminish not the measure or the weight. I see you in prosperity, [enjoying] a grace which precludes any need for stinting [people]; and I fear for you, should you not believe, the chastisement of a besetting day, [besetting] you, destroying you (the attribution of this term [`besetting'] to `a day' [as opposed to `the chastisement'] is figurative, for it [the chastisement] will take place thereupon).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Story of the People of Madyan and the Call of Shu`ayb

Allah, the Exalted, says,

وَإِلَى مَدْيَنَ

And to the Madyan people (We sent),

Allah, says, `We sent a Messenger to the people of Madyan.'

They were a tribe of Arabs who lived between the land of the Al-Hijaz and Ash-Sham, close to the land of Ma`an. Their land was known by the name of their tribe and was thus, called Madyan. Allah sent unto them the Prophet Shu`ayb and he was of the noblest of them in lineage.

For this reason, Allah said,

أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا

their brother Shu`ayb.

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُواْ اللّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـهٍ غَيْرُهُ وَلَا تَنقُصُواْ الْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ

He said;"O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other god but Him, and give not short measure or weight.

Shu`ayb commanded them to worship Allah alone without associating any partners with him. He also prohibited them from cheating in their weights and measures (for business transactions).

إِنِّيَ أَرَاكُم بِخَيْرٍ

I see you in prosperity,

meaning, `in your livelihood and your provisions. And verily, I fear that you will be deprived of this bounty that you are enjoying by violating Allah's prohibitions.'

وَإِنِّيَ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ مُّحِيطٍ



and verily, I fear for you the torment of a Day encompassing.

This means the abode of the Hereafter
