Al-Qur'an Surah Hud Verse 62

Hud [11]: 62 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْا يٰصٰلِحُ قَدْ كُنْتَ فِيْنَا مَرْجُوًّا قَبْلَ هٰذَآ اَتَنْهٰىنَآ اَنْ نَّعْبُدَ مَا يَعْبُدُ اٰبَاۤؤُنَا وَاِنَّنَا لَفِيْ شَكٍّ مِّمَّا تَدْعُوْنَآ اِلَيْهِ مُرِيْبٍ (هود : ١١)

we worship

our forefathers worshipped?

ءَابَآؤُنَا
our forefathers worshipped?
wa-innanā
وَإِنَّنَا
And indeed we
lafī
لَفِى
surely (are) in
shakkin
شَكٍّ
doubt
mimmā
مِّمَّا
about what
tadʿūnā
تَدْعُونَآ
you call us
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to it
murībin
مُرِيبٍ
suspicious"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo yaa Saalihu qad kunta feenaa marjuwwan qabla haazaaa atanhaanaaa an na'bu da maa ya'budu aabaaa'unaa wa innanaa lafee shakkim mimmaa tad'oonaaa ilaihi mureeb (QS. Hūd:62)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "O Saleh, you were among us a man of promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? And indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt." (QS. Hud, ayah 62)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said, “O SāliH, we had hopes in you before this. Do you ask us not to worship what our fathers used to worship? We have serious doubts that have disturbed us about the faith to which you are calling us.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

They argued, “O Ṣâliḥ! We truly had high hopes in you before this.[[ They believed that Ṣâliḥ had the potential to be their future leader. ]] How dare you forbid us to worship what our forefathers had worshipped? We are certainly in alarming doubt about what you are inviting us to.”

They said, “O Sālih, we truly had hopes in you before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers used to worship? We are in disturbing doubt about what you are calling us to.”

They said, 'Salih, thou hast hitherto been a source of hope among us. What, dost thou forbid us to serve that our fathers served? Truly we are in doubt, concerning what thou callest us to, disquieting.'

They said, ‘Salih, We used to have such great hope in you. Will you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? We are in grave doubt about what you are asking us to do.’

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

They said: O Saleh! heretofore thou wast amongst us as one hoped for. Forbiddest us thou to worship that which our fathers have worshipped? And verily we are regarding that to which thou callest us in doubt disquieting.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They said; "O Salih! thou hast been of us! a centre of our hopes hitherto! dost thou (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers worshipped? But we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which thou invitest us."

Abul Ala Maududi

They said: 'O Salih! Until now you were one of those among us on whom we placed great hopes. Now, would you forbid us to worship what our forefathers were wont to worship? Indeed we are in disquieting doubt about what you are calling us to.

Ahmed Ali

They said: "O Saleh, we had placed our hopes in you, but you forbid us from worshipping that which our fathers worshipped, and we are suspicious of what you are calling us to."

Ahmed Raza Khan

They said, “O Saleh! You seemed very promising among us, before this – What! You forbid us from worshipping the deities of our forefathers? And indeed we have fallen into a deeply intriguing doubt concerning what you call us to.”

Ali Quli Qarai

They said, ‘O Salih! You were a source of hope to us before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers have been worshiping? Indeed we have grave doubts concerning that to which you invite us.’

Ali Ünal

They said: "O Salih! Before this, you were a source of hope among us. Would you now seek to prevent us from worshipping what our forefathers used to worship? Indeed we are in real doubt concerning what you call us to."

Amatul Rahman Omar

They said, `Sâlih! you have hitherto been among us as one in whom we placed our hopes. Do you forbid us to worship what our fore fathers have been worshipping? And as a matter of fact we are in disquieting doubt about that (faith) you call us to.´

English Literal

They Said: "You Saleh, you had been between us promising/hoped for before this, do you forbid/prevent us that we worship what our fathers worship? And that we truly (are) in (E) doubtful/suspicious doubt/suspicion from what you call us to it."

Faridul Haque

They said, "O Saleh! You seemed very promising among us, before this - What! You forbid us from worshipping the deities of our forefathers? And indeed we have fallen into a deeply intriguing doubt concerning what you call us to."

Hamid S. Aziz

And unto Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. Said he, "O my people! Serve Allah; you have no God but Him. He it is that produced you from the earth, and made you live therein! So ask pardon of Him; then turn to Him in repentance. Verily, my Lord is Nigh, Responsive!"

Hilali & Khan

They said: "O Salih (Saleh)! You have been among us as a figure of good hope (and we wished for you to be our chief), till this [new thing which you have brought; that we leave our gods and worship your God (Allah) Alone]! Do you (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers have worshipped? But we are really in grave doubt as to that which you invite us to (monotheism)."

Maulana Mohammad Ali

And to Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: O my people, serve Allah, you have no god other than Him. He brought you forth from the earth and made you dwell in it, so ask forgiveness of Him, then turn to Him. Surely my Lord is Nigh, Answering.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

They said: O Salih! surely you were one amongst us in whom great expectations were placed before this; do you (now) forbid us from worshipping what our fathers worshipped? And as to that which you call us to, most surely we are in disquieting doubt.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They said: O Salih! Thou hast been among us hitherto as that wherein our hope was placed. Dost thou ask us not to worship what our fathers worshipped? Lo! we verily are in grave doubt concerning that to which thou callest us.

They said, "Salih, we had great hope in you before this. Do you forbid us to worship that which our fathers had worshipped? We are doubtful and uncertain about what you have told us to worship."

Qaribullah & Darwish

They said: 'Salih, before this you were a source of hope to us. What, would you now forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? Indeed, we are disquieted, and doubt that to which you invite'

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

They said: "O Salih! You have been among us as a figure of good hope until this! Do you (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers have worshipped But we are really in grave doubt as to that to which you invite us."

Wahiduddin Khan

They said, "O Salih! We had great hopes in you. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? We are in grave doubt, amounting to suspicion, concerning that to which you call us."

Talal Itani

They said, “O Saleh, we had hopes in you before this. Are you trying to prevent us from worshiping what our parents worship? We are in serious doubt regarding what you are calling us to.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `O Slih, you had been one of promise among us, that is to say, we had hoped that you would become [our] chief, before this, that has issued from you. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped?, in the way of graven images? Truly we are in grave doubt, [doubt] creating [great] uncertainty, concerning that to which you are calling us', in the way of [affirming] God's Oneness.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Conversation between Salih and the People of Thamud

Allah says;

قَالُواْ يَا صَالِحُ

They said;"O Salih!

Allah, the Exalted, mentions what transpired in the discussion between Salih and his people. Allah informs of their ignorance and obstinacy in their statement,

قَدْ كُنتَ فِينَا مَرْجُوًّا قَبْلَ هَـذَا

You have been among us as a figure of good hope till this!

They were saying in this, "We had hope in your strong intellect before you began saying what you have said."

أَتَنْهَانَا أَن نَّعْبُدَ مَا يَعْبُدُ ابَاوُنَا

Do you (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers have worshipped,

"what those who were before us were upon."

وَإِنَّنَا لَفِي شَكٍّ مِّمَّا تَدْعُونَا إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٍ



But we are really in grave doubt as to that which you invite us.

This alludes to the great amount of doubt that they had
