Al-Qur'an Surah Hud Verse 53

Hud [11]: 53 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْا يٰهُوْدُ مَاجِئْتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٍ وَّمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِيْٓ اٰلِهَتِنَا عَنْ قَوْلِكَ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِيْنَ (هود : ١١)

Transliteration:

Qaaloo yaa Hoodu maa ji'tanaa bibaiyinatinw wa maa nahnu bitaarikeee aalihatinaa 'an qawlika wa maa nahnu laka bimu'mineen (QS. Hūd:53)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "O Hud, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you. (QS. Hud, ayah 53)

They said, “O Hūd, you did not bring to us any proof, and we are not to leave our gods on your statement, and we are not to believe in you.

They argued, “O Hûd! You have not given us any clear proof, and we will never abandon our gods upon your word, nor will we believe in you.

They said: "O Hud, you have come to us with no proofs. We shall not abandon our gods because you say so, nor believe in you.

They said, ‘O Hud, you have not brought us any manifest proof. We are not going to abandon our gods for what you say, and we are not going to believe you.

"O Hud!" they said: "You have brought us no clear sign (– a miracle to prove your Messengership). We are not going to forsake our deities on your mere saying so, the more so as we do not believe you.

They said, `O Hûd, you have brought us no clear proof (about your truthfulness), and we will not forsake our gods (merely) for your saying, nor are we going to be believers in you at all.

English Literal

They said: "You Hood, you did not come to us with an evidence, and we are not with leaving our Gods from/on your saying/opinion and belief and We are not to you with believing."

They said, "O Hud! You have not come to us with any proof and we will not forsake our deities upon your saying, nor will we believe you."

"O my people! Ask pardon of your Lord; then turn to Him in repentance; He will send the skies (rain, spiritual, social and material bounties) down on you in torrents; and He will add strength to your strength: turn not away, guilty."

They said: "O Hud! No evidence have you brought us, and we shall not leave our gods for your (mere) saying! And we are not believers in you.

And, O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him, He will send on you clouds pouring down abundance of rain and add strength to your strength, and turn not back, guilty.

They said: "O Hud! No evidence have you brought us, and we shall not leave our gods for your (mere) saying! And we are not believers in you.

Wahiduddin Khan

They replied, "Hud, you have not brought us any clear evidence and we shall not forsake our deities merely at your behest, nor will we believe in you.

Talal Itani

They said, “O Hud, you did not bring us any evidence, and we are not about to abandon our gods at your word, and we are not believers in you.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `O Hd, you have not brought us any clear proof, [any] evidence for what you say, and we are not going to forsake our gods on [the basis of] your saying, that is, because of what you say, and we are not believers in you.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Conversation between (the People of) `Ad and Hud

Allah, the Exalted, informs that they said to their Prophet,

قَالُواْ يَا هُودُ مَا جِيْتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٍ

They said;"O Hud! No evidence have you brought us.

This means that they claimed that Hud had not brought them any proof or evidence for what he claimed.

وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِي الِهَتِنَا عَن قَوْلِكَ

and we shall not leave our gods for your (mere) saying!

They were saying how could his mere statement, "Leave these gods," be sufficient proof for them to leave their idols!

وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُوْمِنِينَ



and we are not believers in you.

This means that they did not believe what he was saying was true
