Al-Qur'an Surah Hud Verse 43

Mufti Taqi Usmani

He said, “I shall take shelter on a mountain which will save me from the water.” He said, “There is no saver today from the command of Allah, except the one to whom He shows mercy.” And the waves rose high between the two, and he was among those who were drowned.

He replied, “I will take refuge on a mountain, which will protect me from the water.” Noah cried, “Today no one is protected from Allah’s decree except those to whom He shows mercy!” And the waves came between them, and his son was among the drowned.

The son replied: 'I will go to a mountain for refuge and it will save me from the water.' Noah said: 'None can save anyone today from the command of Allah except those on whom He may have mercy.' Thereupon a wave swept in between the two and he was drowned.

He said, `I shall betake myself to a mountain for refuge which will protect me from this water.´ (Noah) said, `There is no protection (for anyone) this day, from the decree of Allâh (about this punishment), but he (will be safe) on whom He has mercy.´ And (lo!) a wave separated the two so he (- Noah´s son) was among the drowned.

English Literal

He said: "I will take shelter/refuge to a mountain (that) protects/shelters me from the water." He said: "(There is) no protector/shelterer today, from God`s order/command except who He had mercy upon." And148the waves/surges came in between/intervened between them (B), so he was from drowned/sunken.

He said, "I shall take the refuge of a mountain - it will save me from the water"; said Nooh, "Today there is none who can rescue from the punishment of Allah, except upon whom He has mercy"; and the wave came in between them, so he remained amongst the drowning.

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `I shall take refuge in a mountain that will protect me, preserve me, from the water'. Said he, `This day there is none that can protect from God's command, [from] His chastisement, except -- but -- him on whom He, God, has mercy', he will be protected. God, exalted be He, says; And the waves came between them, so he was among the drowned.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ سَأوِي إِلَى جَبَلٍ يَعْصِمُنِي مِنَ الْمَاء

The son replied;"I will betake myself to some mountain, it will save me from the water."

He believed, in his ignorance, that the flood would not reach the tops of the mountains and that if he clung to the top of a mountain, he would be saved from drowning.

His father, Nuh, said to him,

قَالَ لَا عَاصِمَ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ أَمْرِ اللّهِ إِلاَّ مَن رَّحِمَ

Nuh said;"This day there is no savior from the decree of Allah except him on whom He has mercy."

This means that nothing will be saved today from the command of Allah.

وَحَالَ بَيْنَهُمَا الْمَوْجُ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْمُغْرَقِينَ



And waves came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned
