Al-Qur'an Surah Hud Verse 28

He said, “O my people, tell me, if I am on a clear path from my Lord, and He has bestowed mercy upon me from Himself which is hidden from your sight, shall we, then, impose it upon you by force, while you are averse to it?

He said, “O my people! Consider if I stand on a clear proof from my Lord and He has blessed me with a mercy from Himself,[[ Mercy here means prophethood. ]] which you fail to see. Should we ˹then˺ force it on you against your will?

He said, “O my people, what do you think, if I should have a clear proof from my Lord, and He has bestowed mercy upon me from Himself, but you fail to see it. Can we force you to accept it despite your aversion to it?

Noah said: 'My people! If I base myself on a clear evidence from my Lord, and I have also been blessed by His mercy to which you have been blind, how can we force it upon you despite your aversion to it?

English Literal

He said: "You (my) nation, did you see/understand if I was on an evidence from my Lord, and He gave me mercy from at Him, so (it) was blinding/confusing on you, that do we oblige/compel it to you , and you are to it hating?"147

He said, "O my people! What is your opinion - if I am on a clear proof from my Lord and He has bestowed mercy upon me from Him, so you remained blind towards it; shall we force it upon you although you dislike it?"

But the chiefs of those who disbelieved amongst his people said, "We only see in you a mortal like ourselves; nor do we see that any follow you except the most abject (or meanest, most ignorant or most deficient) amongst us by a rash (or immature) judgment; nor do we see that you have any merit above us; nay more, we think you are liars!"

He said: "O my people! Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, and a Mercy (Prophethood, etc.) has come to me from Him, but that (Mercy) has been obscured from your sight. Shall we compel you to accept it (Islamic Monotheism) when you have a strong hatred for it?

But the chiefs of his people who disbelieved said: We see thee not but a mortal like us, and we see not that any follow thee but those who are the meanest of us at first thought. Nor do we see in you any superiority over us; nay, we deem you liars.

He said: "O my people! Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, and a mercy (prophethood) has come to me from Him, but that (mercy) has been obscured from your sight. Shall we compel you (to accept) it when you have a strong hatred for it

He said, "O my people, tell me: if I have clear evidence from my Lord and He has favoured me with grace from Himself, which you have been unable to recognize, can we force it on you against your will?

He said, “O my people, Have you considered? If I stand on clear evidence from my Lord, and He has given me a mercy from Himself, but you were blind to it, can we compel you to accept it, even though you dislike it?”

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `O my people, have you considered; -- inform me -- if I am [acting] upon a clear proof, a clear statement, from my Lord and He has given me mercy -- prophethood -- from Him, and it has been obscured, concealed, from you (`amiyat, `obscured', a variant reading has the passive `ummiyat), can we compel you to it, are we [able] to force you to accept it, while you are averse to it? We are not able to do that.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Response of Nuh

Allah says, informing about the response of Nuh to his people,

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّيَ وَاتَانِي رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِهِ فَعُمِّيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ

أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا وَأَنتُمْ لَهَا كَارِهُونَ



He said;"O my people! Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, and a mercy (Prophethood) has come to me from Him, but that (mercy) has been obscured from your sight. Shall we compel you (to accept) it when you have a strong hatred for it!

Allah says, informing about the response of Nuh to his people,

أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّيَ

Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord,
Bayyinah means certainty, a clear matter, and truthful Prophethood. That is the greatest mercy from Allah upon him (Nuh) and them (his people).

فَعُمِّيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ
(but that (mercy) has been obscured from your sight),

"Obscured from your sight" in this verse means, `it was hidden from you and you are not guided to it. Thus, you (people) did not know its importance so you hastily rejected and denied it.'

أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا
(Shall we compel you (to accept) it),

This means, "Should we force you to accept it, while you actually detest it.
