Yunus [10]: 36 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ اَكْثَرُهُمْ اِلَّا ظَنًّاۗ اِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِيْ مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔاۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلِيْمٌ ۢبِمَا يَفْعَلُوْنَ (يونس : ١٠)

Transliteration:

Wa maa yattabi'u aksaruhum illaa zannaa; innaz zanna laa yughnee minal haqqi shai'aa; innal laaha 'Aleemum bimaa yaf'aloon (QS. al-Yūnus:36)

English / Sahih Translation:

And most of them follow not except assumption. Indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of what they do. (QS. Yunus, ayah 36)

Most of them follow nothing but conjectures. Surely, conjectures are of no avail in the matter of truth at all. Certainly, Allah is fully aware of what they do.

Most of them follow nothing but ˹inherited˺ assumptions. ˹And˺ surely assumptions can in no way replace the truth. Allah is indeed All-Knowing of what they do.

English Literal

And most of them do not follow except assumption/supposition , that the assumption/supposition does not suffice (replace) from the truth a thing, that God (is) knowledgeable with what they make/do.

Say, "Is there any of your associates who guides unto the truth?" Say, "Allah guides unto the truth." Is then He who guides unto the truth more worthy to be followed, or he that guides not except he is himself guided? What ails you then, how judge you?

Say: Is there any of your associate-gods who guides to the Truth? Say: Allah guides to the Truth. Is He then Who guides to the Truth more worthy to be followed, or he who finds not the way unless he is guided? What is matter with you? How do you judge?

Tafsir jalalayn

And most of them, in worshipping idols, follow nothing but conjecture, since they imitate their fathers therein; truly conjecture avails nothing against truth, when what is sought is knowledge. Surely God is Knower of what they do, and will requite them for it.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ إِلاَّ ظَنًّا إَنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْيًا


And most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Certainly, conjecture can be of no avail against the truth.

Allah explained that they did not follow their own religion out of evidence and proof. The fact is that they were following mere conjecture and imagination. But conjecture is in no way a substitute for the truth.

He said,

إِنَّ اللّهَ عَلَيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ



Allah is All-Aware of what they do.

This is both a threat and a promise of severe punishment.

Allah said that He would reward them for their actions with a complete reward
