Al-Qur'an Surah Yunus Verse 13

Indeed We have destroyed generations before you when they transgressed, and their Messengers had come to them with clear signs, but they were not the ones who would believe. This is how We punish the guilty people.

And We certainly destroyed several generations before you when they went wrong inspite of the fact that there had come to them their Messengers (of God) with clear proofs but they would not believe. Just (as We repaid them) so We repay all such guilty people (with punishment).

And We had destroyed the generations/peoples of eras from before you, when they caused injustice/oppression, and their messengers came to them with the evidences, and they were not to believe, as/like that We reward/reimburse the nation the criminals/sinners.

Tafsir jalalayn

And indeed We have destroyed generations, communities, before you, O people of Mecca, when they did evil, by way of idolatry, and, indeed, their messengers brought them clear proofs, indicating their truthfulness; but they would not believe (wa-m kn li-yu'min; this is a supplement to zalam, `they did evil'). So, just as We destroyed those, We shall requite the sinning, the unbelieving, folk.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Admonition held in the Destruction of the Previous Generations

Allah tells;

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا الْقُرُونَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُواْ وَجَاءتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ وَمَا كَانُواْ لِيُوْمِنُواْ كَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي الْقَوْمَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ




ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ خَلَيِفَ فِي الَارْضِ مِن بَعْدِهِم لِنَنظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ
